As you might know, FinOps is a cultural practice. It is the way teams manage their cloud and technology costs, where everyone takes ownership of their cloud usage, supported by a central best-practices group.
Capability “FinOps Culture & Enablement”
The FinOps Framework highlights the importance of enabling teams across the organisation to take ownership of their technology usage and actively contribute to financial accountability. A strong FinOps culture is a key element within this framework, ensuring that FinOps principles are understood, applied, and continuously developed across all teams.
Cross-functional teams in Engineering, Finance, Product, etc. work together to enable faster product delivery while gaining more financial control and predictability. Therefore, it is very important for your organisation to invest in building a strong FinOps culture. To achieve this, organisations need to build shared knowledge, create transparency, and empower teams to act on FinOps insights. Through continuous education, communication, and collaboration, FinOps becomes part of everyday decision-making and is sustainably embedded into the way teams work.
FinOps culture and trends in data
The FinOps Foundation has published its latest State of FinOps report, providing valuable insights into how the FinOps practice is evolving across organisations. The most recent data shows that FinOps has significantly expanded beyond pure cloud cost management and is increasingly focused on managing the overall value of technology investments.
Practitioners are no longer only analysing past spend, but actively shaping future technology decisions and investments. A key trend highlighted in the latest report is the strong expansion of FinOps across different technology areas. Today, a large majority of organisations manage not only public cloud, but also SaaS, licensing, private cloud, and data centre costs as part of their FinOps practice. At the same time, new topics such as AI cost management have rapidly gained importance and are now a central part of the FinOps agenda.
Despite this evolution, one of the recurring challenges remains the enablement of teams and the organisational adoption of FinOps practices. As FinOps becomes more embedded in strategic decision-making, it is increasingly important to ensure that engineers and other stakeholders are empowered to act on FinOps insights. This reinforces the importance of building a strong FinOps community that supports knowledge sharing, collaboration, and continuous learning across the organisation.
Best Practices to build a FinOps Community
The goal of building a FinOps community is the continuous transfer of knowledge and the embedding of FinOps best practices into the standards of the corporate culture, as well as the creation of transparency regarding cloud costs.
From our project experience, there are four different dimensions to building up a vibrant FinOps Community:
Reporting – Provide information and transfer knowledge about what, how, when, and with what impact cloud efficiency can be achieved.
Connecting – Connect employees to share solutions, experiences, and challenges.
Involving – Make people part of the knowledge transfer and FinOps practice so they feel ownership of the success.
Engaging – Work closely with project teams to support their individual needs and goals.
Offering individual trainings for specific target groups
Through FinOps trainings, we aim to promote the ability of everyone to play their role. It is important that tailored trainings are developed for each target group, as each group has a different perspective on FinOps. This should be taken into consideration to increase acceptance as much as possible. However, regardless of the target group, important basics should be taught so that everyone in the organisation can speak the same language.
Implement a FinOps knowledge base
The creation and continuous expansion of a FinOps knowledge base can be built up in a knowledge management tool. The aim is to facilitate onboarding and continuously expand knowledge across the organisation. One important starting point is to collect all existing content together. Start in a simple way by gathering documents, process descriptions, and specialist knowledge. In the second step, you can define a standardised structure. The biggest challenge is keeping the content up to date, which requires discipline and clear responsibilities, such as defined owners or gatekeepers.
Permanent recording of an organisation-internal network
The development of an active FinOps community aims to embed FinOps in the corporate culture in the long term. Over time, more employees should be involved to independently advance the FinOps topic within the company. Regular updates and knowledge sharing are key success factors. The FinOps team should actively encourage project teams to share their own success stories, as this significantly strengthens the community mindset.
The organisation of regular roundtables
It has proven highly effective to organise regular roundtables every 2–3 months. These sessions typically last 60–90 minutes and provide a platform to present FinOps topics and real project success stories. This enables the entire community to learn and exchange ideas. The FinOps team should take ownership of organising and moderating these sessions and support project teams in preparing their contributions.
Project 1o1
Regular meetings with project teams help to establish a continuous exchange and demonstrate the relevance of FinOps. These sessions allow for discussion of project-specific optimisation potential and upcoming changes. This information is highly valuable for making organisation-wide decisions.
Now, let’s start!
Building a vibrant community is very multi-faceted. Therefore, you should try different approaches in your organisation and continuously evaluate what works and what does not. There is no single solution that fits all organisations. Every organisation is highly individual in how it operates and how it deals with change. The key to success lies in continuously learning, iterating, and adapting your approach over time. I hope you got some ideas from this article. Now it is your turn to build and establish your own vibrant FinOps community. Much success!
